1. Why can't I do a cross-genre story?
The purpose of the Genre Challenge is to try writing in genres you never have before, even if you're mot particularly comfortable doing so. Crossing genres typically involves integrating a more familiar genre with the less familiar one, which defeats the purpose of the challenge.

2. So I can't inject a little humor into my Fantasy story?
A hint of another genre is okay; it's more important to avoid complete integration. If a funny moment happens in your otherwise serious story, that's okay.

3. Does the story have to be 1000 words? Mine's a bit short...
Yes. We decided that the submissions must be of a sufficient length to tell a complete story. 1000 words is only about 33 words a day, it's not that bad!

4. I missed my favorite genre! Will it come around again?
Yes. Genres will repeat eventually, although it might be quite a while. However, we'd really like it if you tried some of the other genres in the meantime!

5. I've only ever written fanfiction. Can my submissions all be fanfiction of the appropriate genre?
No. Fanfiction is one of the recognized genres, and has already been a Genre of Choice (yes, it will come around again eventually). Unless the Genre of Choice specifically states otherwise, submissions must be original.

6. I decided that I want to develop my submission into a novel. Can I have it removed from the Archive?
Of course. If you want, just email GC with your request and the link will be removed. Please state whether it's all right to leave the story information up - we'd like to keep record of each submission up even if the story isn't there.

7. I'd like to submit a story and even have it included in the anthology, but do I have to give up my rights to it?
Not at all. Ownership of any story stays with the author - we just link to the story. If you want the story included in the anthology, basically you're giving printing rights, with the understanding that the story will only be used for non-profit charitable purposes. At no time under any circumstances do you lose ownership of the story.

8. If I submit a story, does it have to be included in the Anthology?
Inclusion in the Anthology is completely voluntary. When you post your story, one of the questions in the Header information is "Inclusion In Anthology? (Y/N)". Simply answer "No", and your story won't be used. Read the submission instructions for more details.

9. Does my story have to be proofread? Does Genre Challenge provide betaing services?
Your story doesn't have to be proofread, but it is strongly encouraged. Part of the benefit to posting stories online is making it possible for people to read them and give constructive criticism. To receive the best, most useful criticism, you'll probably want to polish your story as much as possible before submission. And if you plan on allowing the story to be in the anthology, you'll want it to be as good as possible. Right now, Genre Challenge doesn't offer proofreading. However, you're welcome to solicit a proofread from another participant by posting a request at the GC Livejournal.

10. If my story sucks, will it be rejected?
Absolutely not. The Genre Challenge does not reject any stories, so long as they don't break any laws. A story being "good" or "bad" is subjective, and it's not our intent to pass judgment. Besides, you're going to be writing far outside your comfort zone - it's very unlikely you'll produce your best work while participating in the challenges. The only opinions you'll receive will be constructive criticism from readers, and if the criticism is insulting and not constructive it will be deleted. Plus, if you find yourself dissatisfied with your submission, you can always edit it and resubmit.
