Genre Challenge started in February 2007. I was contemplating what my project for the 2007 NaNoWriMo would be, and decided that I would try my hand at writing a novel of erotica. But as soon as I decided that, I realized that I had almost no experience writing outside of the genres of science fiction and fantasy. To rectify this, I decided to challenge myself to write an original story of at least 1000 words every month, each in a new genre.

Since I have a lot of friends who are also writers, I thought that some of them might want to try the challenge as well. So I set up a Livejournal community, which I called Genre Challenge.

To my surprise, a lot more people were interested than I'd expected. Within a month over 60 people had "friended" the community (although not all of them have submitted stories). I've had a blast running the community, and I've gotten to know and chat with writers I might never have met otherwise. The community has come to be more than a monthly writing challenge: it's a way to show that anyone can write, something I've firmly believed for a long time.

The first year of Genre Challenge has been a great experience, and I hope to see the community.continue to grow and welcome new participants for a very long time!
